“Bramble Bush Bay” is a chain ferry operates across the mouth of Poole Harbour. It was built in 1994 by Richard Dunston Ltd of Hessle, Yorkshire was the last vessel built there before the yard’s bankcruptcy. The ferry has only recently returned to service often being out of action for four months firstly for the biennial service and then a fewdays later with a severe hydraulic failure.

This is from the ferry’s website:

The Sandbanks Ferry was withdrawn from service on 21st December following a severe hydraulic leak on the high pressure drive system. Our Engineers and staff, along with a multitude of Contractors have been working tirelessly to return the ferry to service. Repairs following this leak have been concluded and the Marine & Coastguard Agency signed us off as safe to resume service. However, during testing, mechanical drive system issues were discovered, that were unrelated to the leak. Since that point a succession of challenges arose which have been repaired. Unfortunately we are now left with a shortage of spares for the drive system. Suppliers and Contractors are being extremely helpful in trying to resolve this situation as quickly as possible and we would like to thank them for their assistance. We are extremely conscious of the disruption being out of service is causing and to that end we plan to run a reduced service from 10am Monday 28th January 2019. We will operate from 07:00 to 19:15 daily on a half hourly service, leaving Sandbanks side (Poole) on the hour and half hour and from the Shell Bay side (Studland) on the quarter past and quarter to. The reason we cannot operate a full service is that we have had to reduce the speed of the ferry in order to reduce wear and strain on the drive train whilst our stocks of spares have been utilised in these unforeseeable circumstances. We have been under-going testing over the weekend which has shown that we can operate safely like this. At some point we will need to suspend service again whilst the replacement parts are fitted. However this will be planned, with shifts working 24hrs a day and tasks being overlapped to minimise the time out of service. We sincerely apologise to all our valued customers for this inconvenience, but can only assure you that we are working as hard as we can to return the ferry to full service as soon as possible.

For those of you of follow something called football, Harry Rednap’s house is one of those to the left of the ferry.
